This database indexes approximately 492,000 marriage records filed with the State of New Jersey from 1 May 1848 through 31 December 1900. Records from May 1848-May 1878 are from a ledger book, while records from June 1878-December 1900 are individual marriage certificates.
May 1848-May 1878
Complete records include the name, age, and residence of the bride and groom, the parents' names, the date and place of marriage, the officiant, and the groom's occupation. Citations for these records will be in book and page format.
June 1878-December 1900
Complete records include the name, age, country of birth, occupation, number of marriages, and residence of the bride and groom, name and country of birth of the parents, the date and place of marriage, and the officiant. Citations for these records will in drawer, place code, and certificate number format.
Note that marriages were also recorded at the county level from 1795 - 1878. County marriage returns typically record only the marrying parties, date, and officiant. Consult our
